Ojibwa Tradition as I learned it as a child

A traditional story I was told when I was a child by my people, the Ojibwa, 50 years ago.

At a children’s learning circle.

All things, both animate and inanimate have spirit energy. Universe is living spirit. The stars are the Spirit Elders. The moon is Spirit Grandmother and the Earth is Spirit Mother. All upon the Mother is of the living spirit, the rocks, the soil, the plants, the animals, also the water and all that resides within it. Just as is the air and all that resides within it.

 

This was why in those days when one had used what they needed from the land for nourishment it was not only a custom but a respect to give an offering of tobacco and prayer on thanksgiving to the Spirit who had provided for us. It was believed that all that was provided to the people for sustenance should be returned to the earth to replenish the Earth Mother's living spirit.

 

Then there is the moon cycle ceremony of Grandmother moon who comes to visit every month to cleans and prepare the girl child for womanhood or to cleans the soon to be mother with the gift of bringing forth life energy in the sacred moon lodge.

 

Father sun gives sustenance to Mother Earth and her children, the children of the grandfather stars, the realm of the ancestors, from whence the star children came so shall they return.

 

In the old days the people celebrated pot-loch twice per year, spring and fall. This is the ancient way of thanking mother earth for our sustenance. That is the basis of what the modern day pow wow is supposed to represent.

 

A sacred tradition of thanksgiving to father sun and the spirit mother earth for providing us with the abundant seasons of trading, hunting, fishing and harvesting which we have been blessed with to sustain us through the long sleeping time. All is in harmony, all have their seasons and all serve their purpose, from the tiniest insect to the largest of the four legged.

 

The medicine man or woman (shaman), practice healing of the spirit and body as well as provide advice for daily living.  They call upon the guidance of the spirits of the ancestors or ancient ones, the spirits of the animal realm, and the elements for help  when performing their ceremonies and healing and when seeking direction for this earthly journey.

As well as being a believer of spirituality I also have a love for the sciences.

Physicists today have discovered that there are various frequencies of energies that can be observed on the spectrum of light coming from everywhere, the Earth, plants, air and water as well as from Universe itself. All is connected upon an infinite web consciousness or synchronous energy resonance.

 

In Metaphysics which quantum physics is also fast catching up on the idea believed that If you can be at peace with yourself, you can become penetrate beyond the physical gray veil and be harmonious with the universal consciousness around you. Your greatest requirement will be in *BELIEVING WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST DOUBT,* in your ability to do so.

 

You need to be in harmony with the Earth elements, *Gaia,* to manifest what you need or want. Do not forget that these energies do not discriminate negative from positive, that is left for you to make the right choice as to what you do with it, but beware, there is the law of returns one has at some point in time to deal with, some call this "Karma".

 

You can place your request or prayer to the elements in the Native traditional way, by sprinkling a sweet grass, sage or tobacco offering on an open flame as the fragrant smoke lifts your prayer or petition up to the heavens to Great Spirit.

 

But prayers alone will not manifest your desired request, you must still put on your moccasins and till the land to grow the seed you have planted from your thoughts, so that it may be nurtured and grown into being in this reality. You will be guided and will never be alone, for Great Spirit is there to lead you.

Yes, if you trust and believe. This does not necessarily mean that your request will manifest itself out of thin air, one still has to do the button pushing from this side to help manifest those desires. But each step you take will be guided if you pray or request Great Spirit to direct you. Then people places and things required to make it happen will be there when needed.

This reminds me of the 13 steps which lead to the manifestation of our visions according to Mesoamerican belief ... From the seed to the flower and the fruit and then the seed again which is being planted by falling from the ripe plant there are 13 steps - and these 13 steps can be observed everywhere. Interestingly, the first nine steps are "invisible" - they are grounded in the Spirit World. With the tenth step the vision turns reality - and the 13th is already about disintegration again ...

 

Yes, we have to TEND the seeds we plant ... and be ready to take the according steps!

Yes exactly, nurture the seed just as Earth mother tends to her children. Unfortunately there are those who think they can continue taking from the mother without giving anything back.
