Eighteen and Life to Go

I’d like to tell you a little story about a boy and a girl. It started
simple enough with a boy and his one true love; the only friend that
never betrayed him and the only place he felt safe from the harshness of
the world. His mind and heart were lost to “Cars”. In this place he
found his solace and his solitude.

Somewhere close by, but alone herself was a girl. She had no one to call friend, and no one to consider family. Her solace was
pain. It was the only thing that seemed to fill the holes in her life.
She would tell you that no one talks to her, but “She Talks To Angels.”

On March 21, 1987, this boy and this girl met in Junkieland. Though it may have been the oddest of places to find love, they shared
their pain “Under the Bridge” in the city. Now the two had found a
place of common ground to share their loneliness. They were not in love
that they would admit, though. They were just friends.

Somewhere in the midst of all of the sleepless nights and less than law abiding life they had run to, they realized that they had
something nagging at them. Each time a trace of the other would skirt
the edges of their minds, they would think to themselves, “I ‘Need You
Tonight’”. Though neither one would say it out loud. At least not yet.

Of course, they didn’t need to say anything. After all, what they held inside was “More than Words” could ever say.

About four years after that initial meeting, as so often happens, rumors began to circulate that theirs was much more than simple
friendship. Realizing there were indeed feelings to be considered and
that they both knew by now that this was love, they decided to go ahead
and give everyone “Something to talk about.”

Since distance had never parted them for long and they knew that even if circumstances parted them for a time as it had done in the
past, they were forever each other’s “Faithfully”, and nothing could
change that fact.

So on August 1, 1992, they decided to do something that was in neither one’s personality. They stood before God and the 13 people who
showed up and declare that this was a permanent love that could not be
broken. They got married.

It took me a week to pick out our wedding song. As a girl, the only requirement I ever had about the day I
got married was that I wanted to walk down the aisle to a song of my
choosing. Of course God laid the decorations out for our day. The
Sunday service flowers came in on Saturday afternoon, and so they
provided the decorations. A hail storm began to brew late that
afternoon and the universe stopped the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex so
that proper notice might be given to this divinely mandated union. The
Divine Collective smiled and sighed a sigh of relief as if to say,
“Finally.” And at 8 pm CST in a short 10 minute ceremony, we were
married with both of our boys in attendance. Of course our 2 year old
son David did not quite grasp the idea and so paraded around singing,
“Happy Birthday” as his brother Justin, a mere 4 ½ months old slept in
the arms of a relative. But really, David had it right. It was sort of
a birthday. It was the birth of two lone souls finally becoming one.

The song I chose was from me to him. Pay attention to the words, and you
will understand. He was, and still is, my “Desperado”.

And so to you my dear sweet one, my life, my love, my soul mate and twin flame. After all this time, “You’re still the one.” Happy
18th anniversary. Our love is finally legal age. So let’s celebrate.
