 Bodhidharma (chinese DaMo)- is the mendicant or wandering monk who brought Buddhism to China from India. When he arrived at Shaolin temple and saw the sorry state of health the Taoist monks were in, as well as their repeated victimization at the hands of bandits, he resolved to teach them health promoting exercises (QiGong) as well as fighting techniques to defend the temple for which the Shaolin monks later became famous. During his time there he spread the dharma. He also spent ten years meditating in a cave staring at the wall (where some Zen or Ch'an practices come from) before attaining enlightenment. It is said that his reflection can still be seen in the stone that he faced so great was his concentration. His attributes are gigantic ears (strong kidneys & longevity), a bald head, beard, and a large nose. If you see a painting of a monk with these characteristics you can bet it is probably good ole' Da Mo!
