The Miracle that is my left hand....

Seven years ago due to some stupidity on my part I sustained a back injury that would prove at the time to come close to be my undoing. 6 months of intense back pain finally prompted the doctors to look more deeply into the cause of my troubles at which time they discovered an almost healed fractured vertebrae between my shoulder blades. At the time I was in school for auto mechanics and despite the pain and with much help of my family and friends at school I had continued both to participate in my classes as well as work part time at a garage close to my home. Unfortunately when I was finally diagnosed with the fracture the troubles with my health were far from over, due perhaps to my stubborn nature and my insistence to continue working I now had two herniated discs above and below the break. The pain was intense and as the testing went on I became weaker as my muscles finally gave up their fight to keep me on my feet. My system locked up and even the neuro-surgeon was doubtful I would ever work again; in fact they told me my chances of returning to a normal life were slim to none. I had a daughter to feed so that answer was not acceptable to me. I was blessed to have a family doctor who did not do giving up and he found for me an elderly Chinese doctor who was willing to take on my case. She asked simply if I wished to work again to which I of course I gave an enthusiastic yes. She confided in me that healing is 90% mental and that if I believed that someday I would be better then I would in the end win this battle and overcome both the pain and the loss of strength. As my muscles had locked she began an experimental treatment that included two sessions’ of 24 very long needles with which she would inject Botox into my muscles. The treatment was not covered my OHIP and it was a struggle to find a way to pay, but somehow I knew it would be my only chance. In her defence she tried to get the government to accept my case as a case study, they denied her request. Still in the end the money was found and the treatments began. A month later I walked into the doctor’s office with my daughter so that she at the tender age of 7yrs thank this woman for giving her her mother back.

Too much damage however had been done to some of the nerves and my left arm and hand remained weak and at times not exactly what you would call useful. Even as my body got stronger my hand got weaker; it felt odd and detached at times, numb like it wasn’t there. I am a waitress and was embarrassed that at times I would drop things I had picked up with my left hand, though I learned to compensate with my right. I have always been able to use both hands so these moments when my arm or hand would not do as I asked it were extremely discouraging. The funny feeling that was there would sometimes get extremely intense and it was a constant reminder that I was not quite physically whole.

Until now...

Yesterday my hand became extremely itchy in the early hours and as the day went on it began to burn. Sometime in the evening it began to swell and it turned a mottled shade of blue, red and purple. It felt like it was on fire and I showed it to my roommate who thought that maybe I was having an allergic reaction to something I had touched. We applied cortisone cream in the hopes that it would easy the burning and I put it out of my mind as being anything to worry about. The pain had eased a bit by the time I went to bed and I fell asleep thinking that in the morning my hand would be better. At the time I had no idea how right I was.

I did not notice it right away this morning when I woke, nor when I drove myself and my roommate to the restaurant are we employed at. During my shift however I noticed something, there was warmth there in my hand, and feeling... I began to poke and prod at it, then I tried to use it squeeze my other hand, something I have done many times before to see if it had gained any strength. There the miracle began, as I shut my hand I could feel the muscles tighten and I knew then by some miracle my hand had come back to life. I could in fact feel the difference right up my arm, and in the left side of my back, spots on my body that have for the last 6 years always felt like they simply didn’t belong to me. I can feel it now as I type this, there is a tingling in my fingers and my muscles that I am not used to being there and it is with a sense of awe that I am about to go back to work and embark on my evening shift.

Before I do though, I wanted to share this story because I believe in miracles and I know this to be an incredible gift. Maybe the muscles and nerves simply grew back, or rerouted themselves, maybe there is a simple explanation but for somebody who has believed for a very long time that my left side would never be in balance with or as strong as my right side this to me is a miracle...

Maybe it has no impact on the lives of most, and maybe it isn’t a life saving miraculous occurrence but it is proof that miracles happen, and that sometimes gifts are given that cannot be explained. 6 years of thinking my body would never heal, and ten minutes to type this up and share the story with you; my way of acknowledging the gift and showing gratitude for the miracle that is my left hand...
