This year on Mother's Day weekend in America, a very special event took place. Three white bison calves were born in Bend, Oregon into a herd of 11 white buffalo. This herd of 11 white buffalo was moved up from Arizona last August, when the owner of the herd's dying wish was that they move to greener pastures.. These newly born white bison are not albino -- which have pink noses and eyes, but rather these rare babies have brown noses and blue eyes. And they were born big and strong and very white which is a very good sign that they will make it to adulthood.
In some Native American cultures the White bison symbolize peace and prayer. So the birth of three at once is considered to be an extraordinary event at the nonprofit, Sacred World Peace Alliance where they were born. "There are some prophecies that say if the buffalo come to the western shores, world peace will begin," said the president of SWPA, Cynthia Hart-Button. "And we're seeing changes. It's a sign of change to the world." She also added that according to history, the chances of a white buffalo being born is one in 10 million.
The legend of the White Buffalo
Sioux mythology has a female character of supernatural origin referred to as the White Buffalo Calf Woman.
According to legend, two men were sent out by their starving and demoralized villages to look for buffalo herds near the Sacred Hills, also know as the Black Hills, in western South Dakota.
They had a vision of a maiden dressed in white buckskin, who told them to prepare the villages for her arrival. She appeared soon after and brought prayers, teachings, a sacred pipe and other offerings.
She promised to return someday to renew the people's faith and spirit, and as she departed, she turned into a buffalo calf. She rolled over repeatedly, changing from black to brown to yellow to white. Ever since, the white buffalo has been viewed as a return of the maiden and her promise of renewal.

Sacred White Buffalo Born in Texas

GREENVILLE, Texas - A white buffalo, an animal rich in the lore of Native Americans and sacred to many tribes, was recently born in Texas.
Arby Little Soldier said the remarkable animal was born on his ranch near Greenville, about an hour northeast of Dallas, in the middle of a thunderstorm on May 12.
White buffalo are extremely rare. To be considered sacred they must also have certain markings.
“And that is black nose, black eyes and black-tipped tail. Not the pink eyes or the blue eyes or the pure albino,” he said. “This one here is the full one that’s counting now. He’d be the third. And the fourth in our Native American prophecy that is the end of the last days.”
Little Soldier would like the name the calf Lightning Medicine Cloud, but he must wait until tribal leaders from around the country gather at his ranch to determine what prophecy the animal brings.
The rancher grew up on a reservation in North Dakota. He said his great grandfather was the son of the legendary Chief Sitting Bull.
He and his wife now maintain a herd of about 1,600 bison in North Dakota, selling meat and byproducts. They keep just a small show herd in Texas.
The Little Soldiers believe the last true sacred white buffalo, a female named Miracle, was born in 1994 in Wisconsin.
“They called it back when Miracle was born a pilgrimage. And now we understand a pilgrimage of people who want to come and take the walk and see him in the right way but not a tourist attraction,” said Patricia Little Soldier.

Born during a thunderstorm in Greenville, Texas, his name is Lightning Medicine Cloud. The Lakota Sioux have a legend that the return of the great white buffalo will signal the dawn of a new age of limited government, fiscal responsibility, greater individual liberty, an end to judicial activism, a strong Tenth Amendment, and peace and love and stuff like that. I think.
Because of his unique colour, the two-month-old calf, still unsteady on his feet, caused over 2,000 Native Americans from across the U.S. to flock to the Lakota Ranch, in Greenville near Dallas, for yesterday's celebrations.White buffalo are considered to be sacred signs in several Native American religions, and thus have great spiritual importance in those cultures and are visited for prayer and other religious ceremonies.

The Lakota Sioux believe that Whope, the goddess of peace, once appeared in the form of a white buffalo calf, and the belief is that the goddess will return once four such calves are born, bringing in 'a new age', which some reckon could be the end of the world.
'He's the hope of all nations,' said Arby Little Soldier, upon whose land the calf was born on May 12.
'That night it started to rain and thunder and lightening and hail. But now the red man, black man, white man and yellow man; we've all got to come together as one.'

The First White Buffalo Calf was born in Colorado in 1933
In 1994 MIRACLE was born in Janesville, Wisconsin.
She was reported to have changed colours as White Buffalo Calf Woman did on her disappearance - and she gave birth to four calves before she died in 2004
In the very same year two other white buffalo calves were born at the ranch of Joe Merrival on the Pine Ridge reservation of South Dakota.
The first one was called RAINBOW and it was born on 27 April, but it died 25 hours later of scours, a diarrheatype condition.
The second one, Medicine Wheel, was born on the 9th of May. It was killed, however , in March 2000
And then I also came across this one:
In the mid 1980's a rancher from Fairfax, OK that is full-blood Osage had two white buffalo. The first white buffalo was a cow and she had a white calf. The gentleman still lives in Fairfax although he doesn't raise buffalo any longer, he is 93 yrs old. His name is Tallchief. Both buffalo were shot while in the pasture. There was a news story about them on a Tulsa,OK TV station. They never found the shooter.

We see that the White Buffalo Calf is such a Sacred Symbol,
that it has been feared by those who cling to the power.
According to Chief Arvol Looking Horse,
8 White Buffalo Calves were born by 2001.
