Gomata- Sacred Cow

She is Kamadhenu – the divine cow that fulfils all our desires. Her body is of cow and face is of a woman. "Gavu" means cow and "mata "means mother.

Serving a cow means serving all Gods according to Hindu Mythology .

The holy cow Kaamdhenu emerged out while churning of cosmic ocean.

She was born before the amrutha when the ocean was churned. Her hair exudes fragrance. From her udder she showers Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. She is an abode to self-knowledge, shelters, Sun, Moon and Fire God. All the Gods and the living beings depend on her. She provides us with food and supreme knowledge even when we mildly pray. Let her be near us.

Gomatha is also called Surabhi,Shaval,Aditi and Kamadhenu .

Gavu means cow and shala means shed or home. According to Hindu mythology all the devi devtas (gods) resides in the body of cow. 

Lord Shree Krishna was also called Gopal (Go means cow) because he use to raise his cows bare footed.

The Supreme Lord, the source of all other incarnation and everything is inseparable from His Cows. He is a cowheard boy (GWALA). The Supreme Lord loves His cows so much that He is called Gopal (protector of the cows), Govinda (one who gives pleasure to the Cows). Lord appeared in this world at a place called Gokul.

 

This celestial cow is the mother of the entire universe [matrah sarva bhutanam / gavah sarv sukh prada], she can sustain the complete creation, she is dharma herself, in the form of milk she provides “liquid religiosity”, just by her service one attains dharma, artha, kama and moksha.

Mother cow is the personification of the motherly energy. The day when there will be no cows left in this world, it will be bereft of a mother and thus no other living entities will survive. The cow is the opulence of the material world. The sages survive on the cows, and various religious activities are performed by the support of the cows. (Mahabharata, Anusasana parva)

 

One should see, offer obeisances to, and circumambulate the cow. By doing so, one is supposed to have circumambulated the entire earth, with its seven islands. The cow is the mother of all. She gives happiness to everyone. Those who desire prosperity should circumambulate the cow. (Gavopanisada)

Gomata Aarti

 

Kamadhenu is an all wish satisfying cow of heavens. This prayer (according to the last sloka) is addressed by Indra to Kamadhenu. It has been adapted as a prayer to the cow by all Hindus.

The cow is our mother for life, supplying us with milk. When we are babies, we drink our mother’s milk. When we grow up, Cow becomes our mother for life, supplying us with milk. Out of her motherly love, she gives so much milk that it is not only enough for her calf, but also leaves plenty for us.

Namo devyai Maha devyai,

Surabyai cha namo nama.

Gavam Bheeja swaroopaya,

Namasthe Jagad Ambike.

 

 

 

 

Salutations to the mother of the world,

Who lives as a seed in all cows,

Salutations to that goddess,Who is a great goddess,

And who is the wish yielding cow.

 

 

 

Namo radha priyayai cha

Padmamsaya namo nama,

Nama Krishna priyayai cha

Gavam mathre namo nama.

 

 

 

 

Salutations to the pet of Radha,

Salutations to the essence of lotus,

Salutations to the daring of Krishna,

Salutations to the mother of all cows.

 

 

 

Kalpa vruksha swaroopayai,

Sarvesham sathatham pare,

Ksheeradayai, dhanadayai,

Budhidayai namo nama.

 

 

 

Salutations to her who gives milk,

Riches and intelligence,

Who is the form of wish giving tree,

And Who is greater than everything.

 

 

 

Shubhayai subhadarayai

gopradhayai namo nama

Yasodhayai kerthidhayai,

Dharmadhayai namo nama.

 

 

 

Salutations to her who gives good,

Who takes care of us,

And who gives us cows.

Salutations to her who blesses us with Dharma,

And Who gives us fame and victory.

 

 

 

Stotra shravana mathrena,

Dushta, hrushta jagatprasu,

Mahendraya varam dhatwa,

Go lokam saa yayaou puna.

 

 

 

As soon as she who destroys bad ones,

Heard this prayer of the king of devas,

She gave him all boons

And went to the abode of cows.
