Paranoia by toxic radiation: What you need to know about iodine

BEFORE USING

Tell your doctor, nurse and pharmacist if you. . .

are allergic to any medication, whether prescribed or not;
are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medicine;
breast-feeding;
are taking any other prescription or not, especially amiloride, antithyroid agents, lithium, spironolactone, or triamterene;
have any other medical problems, particularly bronchitis or other lung conditions, hyperkalemia or kidney disease.

PROPER USE

For patients taking this medicine for radiation exposure:

Take this drug only when public health officials or local government to do so.

Take this medicine once a day for 10 days, unless public health officials will otherwise directed. Do not take more of it or take it more often than prescribed. Taking more of the medicine will not protect more and may result in a greater likelihood of side effects.

If the iodine strong stomach upsets, take after meals or with food or milk unless your doctor tells you otherwise. If you continue to stomach upset (nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or diarrhea), consult your doctor.

This medicine must be taken by mouth even if it comes in a dropper bottle.

Do not use this solution if it turns yellow-brown.

Strong iodine Take a full glass (8 ounces) of water or fruit juice, milk or broth to enhance flavor and reduce stomach upset. Sure to drink all the liquid to get the full dose of medicine.

If crystals form in the strong iodine solution, can be dissolved by heating the sealed container with warm water solution and then shaking the pan gently.

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not use double the amount.

To store this medicine:

Keep out of reach of children. Away from heat and direct light. Do not store in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Avoid freezing this medication. Do not refrigerate. Do not keep outdated medicine or no longer needed. Be sure to discard their med

PRECAUTIONS

Your doctor should check your progress at regular visits to make sure this medicine is not causing unwanted effects.

For patients with low potassium diet:

This medicine contains potassium. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.

SIDE EFFECTS

Side effects should be reported to your doctor

Less common - rash, joint pain, swelling of the arms, face, legs, lips, tongue or throat, swollen glands

With long-term use - Burning of mouth and throat, confusion, headache (severe) Increase of saliva in the mouth, irregular heartbeat, metallic taste, numbness, tingling, pain or weakness in hands or feet, sore teeth and gums, upset stomach, head cold symptoms, tiredness, weakness or heaviness of legs

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention

These side effects may go away during treatment, but if they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

Less common - diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, stomach pain

Other side effects not listed above may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.
