Hypomagnesemia (low magnesium)

What is the hypomagnesemia?

Hypomagnesemia is an electrolyte imbalance , with low levels of magnesium in the blood. The normal value of magnesium in adults is 1.5 to 2.5 mEq / L.

Magnesium is one of many electrolytes in the body and normal levels of magnesium are important for the maintenance of cardiac function and nervous system.

What causes hypomagnesemia?

The body regulates the levels of magnesium to mobilize magnesium in and out of cells. The excessive influx of magnesium into cells causes hypomagnesemia.

Magnesium may be excreted by the kidneys. Any damage to the kidneys if not working properly, can cause low magnesium levels.



There are other causes of hypomagnesemia, including:

•Insufficient intake of magnesium in your diet.
•If you have stomach or intestinal problems, may not be able to absorb magnesium intake.

•Magnesium can not be absorbed properly due to alcohol intake, laxative use or diarrhea.
•Increased excretion of magnesium in your body.
•Kidney damage (kidney failure), loss of magnesium through the kidneys is a common cause of magnesium deficiency.
•Certain drugs, including cisplatin and amphotericin B and certain antibiotics that can affect your kidneys.
•Endocrine disorders, such as aldosterone or dysfunction with thyroid and parathyroid glands or diabetes.
•Pregnancy
What are some symptoms of hypomagnesemia to be taken into account?



It may not have symptoms unless the results of blood tests show that your magnesium levels are significantly low.


With blood magnesium levels extremely low: muscle weakness, confusion, and decreased reflexes. You may also notice movements "jerky", high blood pressure and irregular heart rhythms.



What to do if the results of blood tests show hypomagnesemia:

•Follow your doctor's instructions to increase the level of magnesium in blood. If blood levels are very low, may prescribe drugs to increase the levels to a safer range.
•Take all medications as directed
•Take 2 to 3 quarts of fluid every 24 hours, unless you are instructed to limit their intake of fluids.
•If the results of blood tests indicate hypomagnesemia, follow all your doctor's advice regarding the laboratory analysis.
Medicines your doctor may prescribe for Hypomagnesemia:

•Magnesium supplements: If your blood magnesium levels are extremely low, this drug is usually administered intravenously. You can also take magnesium oxide pills.
•Calcium and potassium: If your blood magnesium levels are extremely low levels of calcium and potassium may also be low. Your doctor may prescribe supplements intravenously or in pill form. The levels of magnesium, potassium and calcium did not return to normal to correct these electrolytes.
When to call your doctor:



If you have these symptoms, consult your doctor:

•Increased urinary frequency, painful urination, weight loss.
•If you notice symptoms of low blood sugar such as shakiness, sweating and fatigue.
•If you develop signs of confusion.
•Shortness of breath, chest pain or discomfort, the swelling of the lips or throat should be evaluated immediately, especially if you started with a new drug.
•If you feel your heart beating fast or feel palpitations.
•Nausea that interferes with the ability to eat and unrelieved with prescription drugs.
•Diarrhea (4 to 6 episodes in 24 hours) that is not relieved by anti-diarrheal medications or with a change in diet.
