Did you know that humans are the only creatures on earth to shed emotional tears? What feelings trigger our evolved species to cry it out? Sadness, happiness, anger, sympathy, anxiety and fear are the top (perhaps only) reasons, according to a 2009 study done at Vassar College*. You’ve heard that after a good cry, people feel better – so, how about it? Are the waterworks really good for you?

Let it out! "[Crying is] a release. There is a buildup of energy with feelings," says Stephen Sideroff, PhD, a staff psychologist at Santa Monica--University of California Los Angeles & Orthopaedic Hospital. "For various reasons, a lot of people push down their tears; they suppress them. One of the consequences is we sort of deaden ourselves, to suppress or not even notice we have those feelings inside. The way that looks to the outside world is depression."

Along with that built-up energy is built-up stress, which can be relieved with the release of tears. Researchers have found that chemicals built up by the body during stress (like adrenocorticotrophic hormone [ACTH], one of the best indicators of stress) were removed by tears.
Those who suppress emotions and cannot cry may be jeopardizing their physical health. A saying attributed to British psychiatrist Henry Maudsley goes: "The sorrow which has no vent in tears may make other organs weep." Diseases such as high blood pressure, heart problems and peptic ulcers can be aggravated by the aforementioned buildup of unreleased stress.

It can also be a survival mechanism, notes Jodi DeLuca, PhD, a neuropsychologist at Tampa General Hospital in Florida. ''When you cry," she says, "it's a signal you need to address something." Among other things, it may mean you are frustrated, overwhelmed or, if it happens frequently, it might be a sign of a deeper emotional issue that requires resolving.

Crying also has a practical, biochemical purpose. Not only do tears lubricate our eyeballs, they can kill bacteria. Tears contain lysozyme, a powerful antibacterial and antiviral fluid that can kill 90 to 95 percent of all bacteria in just 5-10 minutes! Without lysozyme, eye infections would be much more prevalent and serious.

Despite all the pros, there are a few arguments for the cons of crying: one is that it can cause bags under the eyes (a small price to pay, in my opinion, for a little emotional release), another is that it exposes your vulnerability if it happens in public, and causes those around you to become uncomfortable, and finally, it may cause people with a certain level of already existing depression or anxiety to feel worse. If you must cry, think of it as the emotional equivalent to a rigorous workout at the gym and the subsequent release of endorphins - so take your chances and let your eyes “perspire”! It can be a refreshing, rejuvenating workout for your soul – and like the gym, the process is painful, but afterwards, don’t you feel so much better than you did before?

Thank YOU, Dear Sonja, for this very informative and helpful article. However, I have to let everyone know, we humans are NOT the only creatures on earth to shed emotional tears. National Geographic has done wonderful stories on Elephants that show remorse and memory of deceased relatives and friends - they not only fondle the bones of the deceased with their trunks, but cry tears as they do so. Their entire behavior during one of these encounters is of grief and mourning. It is indeed "emotional" for them. Also, be aware that the animals of our ascending Mother Earth are also evolving and ascending with us. Pay attention to their behaviors ~ they are showing us they are far more intelligent than we ever imagined. . .and with that intelligence comes an emotional depth long denied by man. We are ALL ONE! I suspect "crying" is good for ALL of Us.
Many Blessings to You. With Infinite Living Love & Light, CrystaLin Joy
Thank you for this important remark, dear CrystaLin Joy!

You know the saying to cry big elephant tears?!? ... well, now I know WHY!

I found this when googeling:

Many people believe that humans are the only animals to show emotions such as sadness, but many scientists believe that other animals show these emotions. There are many cases of Indian elephants crying and producing salt tears, as do humans. Jeffrey Masson and Susan McCarthy wrote ‘When Elephants Weep', which mentions several accounts of animals showing various emotions.

http://www.animalsvoice.com/PAGES/writes/editorial/essays/aniemot/l...... mentions elephants crying and showing other emotions.

http://www.asa.org.za/animals/info/causes/entertainment/babyelephan...... says that elephants cry salt water tears when they are under severe stress. Elephant keepers told Charles Darwin that their elephants shed tears.

http://www.aquaticape.org/tears.html discusses Elaine Morgan's aquatic ape theory. This is the idea that humans went through an aquatic phase in their evolution. Many scientists also believe that elephants went through a similar phase and that shedding salt tears is a way of balancing the concentration of salt within the body. The website says that the lachrymal glands cannot concentrate enough sodium in order to excrete it. It seems that sodium occurs at the same level in tears as in plasma, but the concentration of potassium is 4 times higher in tears as it is in plasma and the manganese concentration may be 30 times higher in emotional tears as it is in plasma. Emotional tears may contain a higher concentration of protein than is found in irritant tears. Crying may help to eliminate prolactin, ACTH, Leucine-Encephalin and manganese.

"About the Use of the Violet Flame"

Excerpt:

I have to tell you that when you as a conscious disciple manage the Violet Flame, a parallel activity of the Violet Flame is initiated internally. This results in the vibrational awakening of your chakras. Therefore, each time when you use the gift of the Violet Flame you are asked not only to focalize your attention on what you want to transmute but also on the internal activity which takes place within yourself.

One of the consequences of the continual use of the Violet Flame is the accelerated awakening of all your chakras, you will, step by step, wake up in a different world from where you live now.
