Comment by Ishema, Carol Suchecki on December 6, 2013 at 10:25pm: I have been hearing about his life in the news. He has always been a great hero of mine, but I just learned two new things about him. I knew that the white rulers in South Africa were being sandwiched between the boycotts and the threat of chaos breaking out as the black population rebelled.

I didn't realize that by choosing him the white rulers thought they could gain control again. They chose Nelson Mandela because he would be a strong black leader and they thought they could control the black population through his leadership. Allowing the vote would break the boycott, releasing the flow of money again. One of them was overheard saying that they could probably take their power back again in another five years.

They did not realize the strength of his character and vision. He transformed South Africa.
