The indestructible, transcendental, living entity is called Brahmn and His eternal nature is termed Self. This supreme personality of godhead, who is greater than all, is attainable by unalloyed devotion. He is all-pervading and everything is situated in Him. — Bhagwad Gita(8:3/22).Brahmn is both transcendent and immanent spirit of the cosmos, pure consciousness beyond time, space and causality. As unchanging reality in the individual is called Atman, Self, the unchanging reality in the universe is called Brahmn.Since the Absolute is the sole substance and ground of the world, it must also be conceived as the seat of infinite energy, power, knowledge and wisdom, beauty, happiness, love and mercy, for we see the manifestation of all this in the cosmic system. Thus, the Absolute must be conceived of as the One — omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, magnificent, ever-active divine personality. Ultimate reality is believed to be a state of equilibrium. Divine energy is all-pervasive and all-encompassing. This universe, before it was created, existed as spirit, as Brahmn. The Absolute does not become. It is ever itself, never an object, never a subject, and, therefore, eternally invisible, indivisible, imperishable. Brahmn is Being, harmonious and complete, whose spirit embraces whole creation and yet remains apart as Self-sufficient Being.Absolute Truth is non-conceptual. We superimpose our impressions and ideas of the higher being upon symbols and images. The Absolute is a bewildering and indescribable reality. One can adore anything as God…We cannot ‘catch’ God. We have to tune ourselves to him in his omnipresence. Our techniques do not grasp things which have neither dimensions nor weight. To label is to define; to define is to confine; to confine is to limit; Brahmn is beyond all that. He is infinite. Upanishads describe ultimate reality as Brahmn, beyond and outside of which nothing exists. Satyam, truth, jnanam, knowledge and anantam, infinity, are stated to be the nature of Brahmn. These terms signify only the lakshana, or attributes, which refer to the very nature of the thing-in-itself that is unique to it, and without which it would lose its distinctiveness. Unlike an adjective, a lakshana cannot be separated from the entity.He moves because the objects of his creation move. He does not move as he stays pervading the whole universe. He is near as he dwells in the hearts of all beings. He is far as he is beyond the reach of mind and intellect. Man in his essential nature is divine. Behind the finite, man is atman, ever-free, ever-pure and perfect. This leads us to discover that the same divinity is the basis of the universe as well. The sages called this Brahmn — the totality of the Self and the not-Self. Whoever knows Him not, he alone knows.Whoever knows, knows Him not! The unknowing thinks. He is within knowledge, the knower knows He is beyond knowledge.— Kena Upanishad. If the undifferentiated one appears manifold to us, it is because of the power of maya or delusion which obliges us to see things as separate rather than as unified in a single field. All humanity is one. We may number the various waves in the sea as separate lines of force, but they all represent unfolding of the same tidal water. The phenomenon is not mysterious. It is reality itself which is, to our limited mind, a mystery that reason must accept.
